How to get ahead in the fashion industry?

I know dozens of people have said this before me, but I’m extremely intent on becoming a fashion designer. I’m currently thirteen years old (freshman in high school). Drawing comes extremely naturally to me (I’m taking AP studio art right now), and I don’t think that will be a problem. I’ve also started to make my own clothes and stuff; I know everyone says “just learn to sew and learn to draw” — is there anything else I can do? I’ve already written to a few designers, and I’m planning on doing an internship with one of them this summer. I’ve already started looking at schools as well, Parson’s being my number one choice.

Actually, one of my main problems right now is my parents. They’re both very traditional ASIAN parents, who are very disappointed that I don’t want to do something “meaningful” with my life and they think I’m wasting my high school education (I go to a VERY expensive private school). How can I convince them that this is a good thing?

something that will help you “get ahead” and make your folks happy too- study business, a great fashion designer needs to be able to run a business. In the mean time continue to draw and sew. Develop your skills as a pattern maker.
